From paper to project
Fold the square diagonally and reopen it; this line sets the accordion direction.
Make parallel folds about 8 mm wide, moving from corner to corner.
Accordion-fold the circle from one edge to the other.
Bring both centres together with the square above the circle.
Wrap the strip around the centre and glue only its overlapping ends.
Gently spread the wings and trim the tips if the silhouette needs balancing.
Check it with an example
A 12 cm square makes larger upper wings than the lower wings from a 9 cm circle. Make a first butterfly from scrap paper to decide your preferred proportions.
If it does not turn out as expected
Avoid wire with small children. If the accordion collapses, sharpen the folds on a table and open from the centre without pulling the tips.
